Duck Decoys

Duck Decoys
One day while out antiquing, I walked into a very dark, old barn filled with all sorts of interesting items. These duck decoys sat on a ledge by a window. The sun was bright and warm and beyond the barn was a barnyard with chickens. The contrast of the dark inside and the bright outside caught my eye and I snapped several photos for future paintings.

The Old Timer
Another place I am drawn to is junkyards. I love to see old rusty machinery. The structure and textures fascinate me. I am sure this old car was a prized possession in its day. Now it a sat in the scrapyard with other broken, rusty relics.

"Mayapple Sunset" Original Oil Painting by Donna Berk Barlup

"Mayapple Sunset"
Original Oil Painting by Donna Berk Barlup

I know!  I paint exclusively in watercolors!  But I thought I would expand my horizons (literally and figuratively) and try oil paint.  So many of my friends paint amazingly in oils.

You must realize that I haven't painted with oils for a few decades ago when I was in college. (I refuse to tell you how many!)  So this is an experiment of sorts.  I am still not sure how I feel about oils but I did have fun and now I have a new-found appreciation for those of you who paint with oils, especially the plein air painters.  They take forever to dry!!!

  1. The sky in "Mayapple Sunset" is fabulous...I love the subtle value gradations and the shift in colors from left to right......looks beautiful here!
