Duck Decoys

Duck Decoys
One day while out antiquing, I walked into a very dark, old barn filled with all sorts of interesting items. These duck decoys sat on a ledge by a window. The sun was bright and warm and beyond the barn was a barnyard with chickens. The contrast of the dark inside and the bright outside caught my eye and I snapped several photos for future paintings.

The Old Timer

The Old Timer
Another place I am drawn to is junkyards. I love to see old rusty machinery. The structure and textures fascinate me. I am sure this old car was a prized possession in its day. Now it a sat in the scrapyard with other broken, rusty relics.

"Mayapple Sunset" Original Oil Painting by Donna Berk Barlup

"Mayapple Sunset"
Original Oil Painting by Donna Berk Barlup

I know!  I paint exclusively in watercolors!  But I thought I would expand my horizons (literally and figuratively) and try oil paint.  So many of my friends paint amazingly in oils.

You must realize that I haven't painted with oils for a few decades ago when I was in college. (I refuse to tell you how many!)  So this is an experiment of sorts.  I am still not sure how I feel about oils but I did have fun and now I have a new-found appreciation for those of you who paint with oils, especially the plein air painters.  They take forever to dry!!!

"Rikki" Original Watercolor by Donna Berk Barlup

I haven't been blogging for a long time.  I have been painting though.... and traveling.  I went on an amazing trip to Thailand and Hong Kong in November.  What incredible things I saw!  I can't wait to paint from the hundreds of pictures I took.  The colors and smells were unbelievable.  It is so interesting to see a culture that is completely different from ours.

Now that I am back to reality, it is time to buckle down and get serious about working in the studio and getting some new paintngs.

                                                             Original Watercolor
                                                               7" x 12"
One of the trips I went on this fall was to visit my dear friend, Rikki.  She and her husband, Stan, own the New York State Renaissance Faire as well as the Renaissance Faires in Chicago and California.  They came to meet me in Tuxedo Park, New York for a weekend in September.  Rikki also is a reenactor at the Faires and she wears some elaborate gowns.  I decided to paint this beautiful woman in her period costume.

Brath & Hughes Fine Art Gallery

I am relatively new to plein air painting but I am having such a good time.  I have met some wonderful artists as part of this group and I have enjoyed the lovely locations we have gone to.  I am looking forward to spending more time en plein air.
This painting was done on the street across from Brath &  Hughes Fine Art Gallery in Mechanicsburg, PA.  The painting is on display there as part of the Mechanicsburg Architectural Show and Wine Walk.  Stop by to see it.

"Waterilies at the NOMA" by Donna Berk Barlup

I am so please and honored to have this watercolor painting accepted  into the Keystone National Exhibition of Works on Paper at the Mechanicsburg Art Center.
Larry Lerew and I went to Brath & Hughes Fine Art Gallery to pick up our paintings from the DPP show and decided to stay and paint on the street across from the Gallery.  This was my results.  It is a 7" x 10" watercolor of the front of the Gallery. It still needs so work especially on the right side.  Or maybe I will just crop it down.

Beech Spring Farm, Orrtanna

Beech Spring Farm Spring House
Watercolor 9" x12"
Today I painted with the Susquehanna Plein Air Painters at Beech Spring Farm in Orrtanna, PA.  What a beautiful spot! It was difficult to decide what to paint so I took about 100 photographs first and then parked my easel under a tree and painted this spring house with the fountain and garden in front of it.
I really am enjoying painting outside and meeting some wonderful Art friends.  Thanks to my neighbor, Larry Lerew, for inviting me along, and to Jane who created these beautiful gardens. and to all the exceptional artists who were painting with me for giving me this opportunity.

Out To Pasture

I painted this scene of my neighbors cows on a very beautiful sunny day. I like the way the shadow of the tree, the fence, the row of the cows and the edge of the clouds form a zig-zag across the painting.
I had this painting hanging at the Majestic Theatre in Gettysburg during the Gettysburg Festival.

Legs

At the Outer Banks last summer and saw the birds watching the water, all facing the same direction.  The verticals of their legs and the horizontal of their bodies was a great composition.
